Champions League in sight: Gladbach secure victory

Borussia Mönchengladbach are back on course for a Champions League spot thanks to their impressive home record. André Schubert’s team recorded a 3-1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on Bundesliga matchday 31, extending their winning run at BORUSSIA-PARK to six games and closing in to within one point of the Champions League places.

Jeremy Toljan’s own goal seven minutes into the game allowed Gladbach to take the lead, which was doubled by Mahmoud Dahoud just seconds before half time. Andrej Kramaric pulled one back for Hoffenheim ten minutes after the restart, which was the first goal Gladbach conceded at home after 448 minutes of keeping a clean sheet. André Hahn restored the two-goal lead on the hour mark and Gladbach went on to secure a comfortable victory.

Gladbach skipper Granit Xhaka helped assist the opener, playing a fine ball into the run of Oscar Wendt, whose pass into the area took a deflection from Hoffenheim’s Toljan into the back of the net. In the closing stages of the first half, Gladbach pushed for a second goal and after Havard Nordtveit missed his attempt in the 41st minute, and Hahn only struck the post a minute later, it was Dahoud who added his name to the scoresheet for Gladbach’s second.

A mistake by Nico Elvedi allowed Hoffenheim back into the game. Kevin Volland picked up a poor pass by Elvedi and played to Kramaric who had no problems converting. The hosts remained calm and TSG keeper Oliver Baumann was called into action several times to prevent a third goal, before he was beaten by Hahn in a one-on-one situation which ultimately decided the game.
