Champagne bottles at the ready: Bayern close in on title defence

FC Bayern München can place their champagne bottles on ice, as the defending Allianz Women’s Bundesliga champions took successful revenge on SC Sand for the DFB Cup semi-final knockout and thus extended their cushion over second-placed VfL Wolfsburg to nine points with just three games left to play.

FCB recorded a 3-0 victory at the fourth-placed side and now need just one point from their remaining three games against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (h), SGS Essen (a) and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (h) in order to successfully defend their title.

Behringer: “Secure the title next week”

“We knew this would be a tough game, but we played well and found our game over time to secure a deserved victory,” said goalscorer Melanie Behringer and looked ahead to their upcoming with Bayer 04: “It was important to win today as we’ll take confidence into our next match. We want to secure the title next week.”

Sand midfielder Anne van Bonn paid her respect to Bayern’s performance: “They really showed their quality today. But we didn’t allow them to create many chances from open play, which we can build on.”

Thomas Wörle’s struggled against a defensively well prepared FC Sand. Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring after 38 minutes, before Germany internationals Melanie Behringer and Sara Däbritz added two more goals after the break.
