Celia Šašić crowned as Women's Footballer of the Year

Celia Šašić, who announced her retirement from professional football two weeks ago, has been crowned Women’s Footballer of the Year. She received 199 of the 657 valid votes, after playing a huge part in 1. FFC Frankfurt's Champions League victory last season.

She will receive the award next Saturday in the build-up to the Super Cup between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern München. Šašić finished ahead of Nadine Angerer and Anja Mittag and won the award for a second time in her career after 2012.

"Football has been a part of me for my entire life and it always will be," Šašić posted on Facebook on July 16th. However, she still decided to "take on a new path and end my active career as a professional footballer."

111 appearances for Germany, 63 goals

Šašić's national team career began in 2005, when she made her debut against Australia on 28th January. In total she made 111 appearances for Germany, bagging 63 goals in the process.

Most recently Šašić scored six goals at the World Cup in Canada and claimed the tournament's Golden Boot award. As well as winning the European Championship in 2009 and 2013, Šašić was also part of the bronze winning side at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

New priorities: University and family

The confident and eloquent attacker, who was top goalscorer in the Bundesliga last season, was Germany's vice captain at the World Cup in Canada this summer.

Šašić will now shift her focus away from the pitch to pursue new avenues. "I now look forward to so many things that lay ahead. Finishing my studies, finding a profession, starting a family and much more."
