Castro’s instant impact - a goal after 32 seconds

1. FC Köln’s changed fortunes in the DFB Cup, Werder Bremen’s impressive home record, 1. FSV Mainz 05’s curious goal difference and Gonzalo Castro’s instant impact. Below, dfb.de explains why all of this is relevant to the second round of this year's Pokal.

CLINICAL: In the 3-1 away win over Hertha Berlin, Köln scored as many goal in a single game as they have done in their opening nine Bundesliga matches combined.

CHANGED FORTUNES: 1. FC Köln and SV Werder Bremen are both still winless in the first nine Bundesliga games of the season, but won against top-flight sides in the last round of the Cup (Köln 3-1 Hertha, Werder 1-0 Hoffenheim).

AWAY RUN: BVB have progressed in their last 17 DFB Cup away games – a club record. Their last away defeat was to FC Bayern in the quarterfinal of the 2012/13 season (1-0).

ONE WIN AWAY: Since their 2-0 win on penalties in Munich in the semi-final of the 2014/15 season, Dortmund have collected nine consecutive away wins and have therefore made another club record. The current Pokal record was set by rivals Schalke 04, when they won ten times in a row on the road between 2009 and 2011.

150-150: Kingsley Schindler’s strike to make it 1-1 between Mainz and Kiel in the last round of the Cup was the 150th goal the Zerofivers have conceded in the DFB Pokal. In extra time though, Daniel Brosinski then netted the winner (3-2) and Mainz’ 150 goal in the competition.

WERDER AND THE 36: Bremen built on an incredible Pokal record against Hoffenheim. Werder have advanced to the next round in every one of their last 36 Cup home games. The last time they were knocked out at home was in the 1988 semi-final against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0).

HERTHA’S HOME CURSE: Hertha have come out on top in just two of their last 14 home games in the DFB Cup (3-0 vs. Gladbach in October 20015 & 3-1 vs. Kaiserslautern in December 2011). They were eliminated in the other twelve home fixtures, including one defeat on penalties and three after extra time.

SUPER SUB 1: Gonzalo Castro found the back of the net just 32 seconds after being substituted on against Magdeburg. His effort was the quickest by a BVB sub in the Pokal since the more detailed data capture began in 2008/09. Since then, only three players have been quicker than Castro.

SUPER SUB 2: In the first two rounds of the current season, 26 goals have been scored by substitutes – two more than in the whole 2016/17 competition. The last time so many goals were netted by subs in the opening two rounds was the 2009/10 season (32 goals). created by tn
