Can's Liverpool beat Premier League leaders Leicester

Liverpool with Die Mannschaft player Emre Can and German manager Jürgen Klopp provided the latest twist in the Premier League title race on Saturday afternoon. In the UK’s traditional Boxing Day programme, the Merseyside club put in a strong performance to beat surprise league leaders Leicester City 1-0, handing the Foxes just their second defeat of the season.

Arsenal could take advantage of Leicester’s defeat in the day’s late kick-off. World Champions Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker will be hoping to take the North London club to the top of the table with victory against Southampton from 20:45 CET.

Belgian Christian Benteke scored the only goal of the game for Liverpool after combining with former Bundesliga and Hoffenheim player Roberto Firmino. Emre Can played the full 90 minutes and impressed in Jürgen Klopp’s side who now sit eighth with the European spots in their sights.

Man Utd beaten again without suspended Schweinsteiger

Meanwhile, record English champions Manchester United have suffered their next painful defeat, albeit without suspended Die Mannschaft captain Bastian Schweinsteiger. Stoke City, with former Leverkusen defender Philipp Wollscheid, were 2-0 winners against Louis van Gaal’s side, with the goals coming from Bojan Krkic and Marko Arnautovic.

It was a third defeat for United in their third game without Schweinsteiger, who has handed a retrospective ban by the English FA. He will be available for selection again on Monday though, when the Red Devils take on struggling Chelsea.
