Can scores on Klopp's home debut

Liverpool could only muster up a 1-1 draw, despite having an extra man for almost an hour in their Europa League group stage match at home against Rubin Kazan on Thursday. Germany international Emre Can had the honour of scoring Liverpool’s first goal in the Klopp era, after he latched onto a wide free kick to cancel out Marko Devic’s early goal. Can won the free kick himself after a foul which saw Oleg Kusmin see red for a second bookable offence.

Despite the numerical advantage, Liverpool were unable to find the winning goal, indicating that they are still some way off from enjoying the benefits of the “Klopp effect”. The once English record champions have drawn six of their last eight matches and have just three points in Group B after drawing all three of their Europa League matches so far.

However, the English side showed the high-intensity football that Klopp demands and they had control of the game, at least after the equaliser. All the statistics, aside from the full-time results, were in favour of the home side.

Gomez scores for Besiktas

Mario Gomez celebrated his first goal for Besiktas, whilst the recently recovered Miroslav Klose also sealed an important three points with Lazio. The Italian side beat Rosenborg 3-1, despite having ten men for most of the match, to record their second victory on matchday three. Gomez’s first goal for the Turkish side Besiktas was only enough to secure a 1-1 draw in a competitive match against Locomotive Moscow.
