Can on target despite surprise Liverpool defeat

Liverpool saw their fine form in the Premier League brought to an abrupt end on Sunday, 4th December, despite a goal from Germany international Emre Can. Jürgen Klopp’s Reds twice threw away what looked to be an unassailable two-goal lead against AFC Bournemouth, losing the match 4-3 having led by two goals. It represented the first time in eleven matches that Liverpool left the pitch as the losing side and missed the chance to go second in the table.

Liverpool now sit in third place with 30 points, behind Arsenal on 31 and league leaders Chelsea on 34. The Blues pulled off an impressive turnaround in an enthralling encounter to beat Manchester 3-1 away on Saturday, Arsenal eased past West Ham with an emphatic 5-1 victory.

Liverpool initially looked very comfortable against the Cherries, with the former Mainz man Loris Karius starting between the goalposts and Can at the back. Sadio Mané and Divock Origi, making his starting debut, gave Liverpool an early 2-0 lead.

Klopp’s side then found themselves under pressure after the hosts got one back through a Callum Wilson penalty but Can quickly restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion with his third of the season. However Ryan Fraser cut the away side’s lead to just one goal again, before Steve Cook drew the Cherries level just minutes later. And it was the home side who were left celebrating as Nathan Aké won it with a strike stoppage-time strike.
