Can: “Klopp expects a lot from me”

Die Mannschaft’s Emre Can returned to Germany this week. His Liverpool side were in the country to face Augsburg in the last 32 of the 2015/16 Europa League. The first-leg took place in Bavaria last night and the sides played out an entertaining goalless draw. After the final whistle, DFB.de spoke to the youngster about the upcoming return leg in England and his relationship with manager Jürgen Klopp.

Question: Mr. Can, did Augsburg surprise you last night?

Emre Can: I wouldn’t say so. I certainly wasn’t surprised by the good football they played. We knew their strengths going into the game. They’re a strong side and they certainly showed that last night.

Question: Was it a hard fought draw?

Can: Yeah I guess. We certainly weren’t at our best last night though and know that we will have to perform much better next Thursday.

Question: Why do you think that was the case?

Can: I guess you could say it’s one of our weaknesses – we’ve not been able to perform at 100% often recently. We need to learn how to be more consistent. We know that we have a few more gears and once we get into them that we’ll be a strong outfit.

Question:Augsburg are likely to be happier with the result…

Can: That’s true. We’re a bit disappointed to be honest because we didn’t reach our potential and we know that we can do better. Despite that the result isn’t too bad from our perspective – it could certainly have been worse. However, our performance wasn’t good enough. We’ll need to improve before next week’s game, which is bound to be tough once again.

Question: What’s it like working with Jürgen Klopp?

Can: I personally really enjoy it. He’s a great manager and a top bloke. We get on well each other.

Question: Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers described you as a Rolls-Royce. Do you think the new manager has similar feelings?

Can: I’ve played a lot of football under him and he definitely expects a lot from me. I know that I still need to improve and I feel that I’ve already taken a couple of steps forward under Klopp, but there’s still a long way to go.

Question: Is it nice to now have someone you can speak German with in England?

Can: Yes it is. It’s the sort of thing that you miss at times.
