BVB: Weidenfeller accepts role as backup keeper

World Cup winner Roman Weidenfeller has accepted that he will play a secondary role this season at Borussia Dortmund. "I accept the situation as it is and will continue to give my full support and service to the team," the 35-year-old told German sport magazine Kicker ahead of their opening Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (18:30 CEST). New BVB coach Thomas Tuchel had declared new signing Roman Bürki as his new first-choice keeper.

"The coach made his decision and informed me about it in a good and open conversation," explained Weidenfeller. Tuchel praised Weidenfeller's "extraordinary team spirit" during Friday's press conference, where he announced his decision on the goalkeeper situation. Weidenfeller is expected to start the game against Norwegian side Odds BK in BVB’s Europa League play-off, to be played on 20th and 27th August.
