BVB maintain fine form whilst troubles mount for Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund made it three wins from three as they kept up their convincing post-winter break form with a 3-2 victory away to VfB Stuttgart in the Friday evening Bundesliga fixture. VfB now find themselves rooted to the bottom of the top-flight table with alarm bells ringing in Baden-Württemberg

BVB begin brightly

Dortmund started the game on the front foot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having an early effort chalked off for offside following an Ilkay Gündogan effort. But not even the linesman’s flag could help the hosts in the 25th minute when BVB took the lead. Kagawa played the ball onto Aubameyang after good build-up play from Germany international Marco Reus, and the Gabon-born striker made no mistake. Their lead proved to be short-lived though when VfB Stuttgart were awarded a penalty seven minutes after Aubameyang’s opener when Georg Niedermeier was felled in the box. Florian Klein converted the resulting spot kick to draw the hosts’ level.

That penalty was not the final talking point of the first 45 minutes in Baden-Württemberg though. Kagawa, who was a livewire throughout, backheeled the ball through to Gündogan, where the BVB midfielder slid the ball under Ulreich to restore the lead for the visitors. There was little action at either end after the interval until the 89th minute, when Reus capitalised on a mistake in the Stuttgart back line to make it 3-1. VfB kept battling and reduced the deficit in added time when Niedermeier headed home from a corner. BVB clung on at the end though to secure their third successive win.
