BVB lose in Krasnodar

Borussia Dortmund passed up the chance to win their Europa League group a game early on Thursday evening. The team who are currently second in the Bundesliga were beaten 1-0 by Russian side FK Krasnodar. Their next and final chance to wrap up the group as winners comes at home on the 10th December against PAOK.

Pawel Mamajew scored the winning goal in just the second minute for the side who currently lie sixth in the Russian Premier Liga, as Dortmund suffered their third defeat – and their second in a row following the 3-1 lost in Hamburg – in 24 games this season. “We put on a very good performance and had a lot of chances on goal. The result is a paradox,” summed up coach Thomas Tuchel after the game.

Schalke safely through

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting ended Schalke 04’s winless run. The forward scored the only goal of the game in the 86th minute giving the Bundesliga side a 1-0 win over Cypriote champions APOEL Nicosia which has secured their place in the first round of the Europa League knock-out stages.

The seven game streak without a win for the Royal Blues from Gelsenkirchen may have come to an end now, but this result may just be some light relief in a tough phase for Schalke. They face Leverkusen at the weekend, and considering they beat APOEL comfortably 3-0 away from home, the run may not have come to a complete halt. Schalke did, however, create lots of goalscoring chances, and Dennis Aogo missed a penalty in the last minute for the home side.

Augsburg throw away points late on

Augsburg’s home defeat to Athletic Bilbao has left them in thrid in Group L on six points, three behind Partizan Belgrade, who beat AZ Alkmaar 2-1. Markus Weinzierl’s team now need at least a 3-1 victory against Belgrade on the last matchday to vbe in with a chance. Bilbao stand solid on top of the group with twelve points.
