BVB crash out after a thriller at Anfield

Borussia Dortmund have been knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by former manager Jürgen Klopp after a thrilling quarterfinal second leg at Anfield. The former BVB coach led Liverpool to a 5-4 aggregate win, securing a 4-3 victory on the night despite trailing 3-1 with half an hour to play. It was Dortmund’s first competitive defeat of 2016, and the first time since December 2011 that they have lost after holding a two-goal lead.

Dortmund looked to be strolling into the semi-finals after just ten minutes, when goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had the visitors 2-0 up. Divock Origi pulled Liverpool back to within a goal early in the second half, but Germany international Marco Reus scored less than ten minutes later to seemingly end the home side’s challenge. However, Klopp’s side didn’t give up.

A driven finish from Philippe Coutinho in the 66th minute and a Mamadou Sakho header with 12 minutes to go gave the home fans hope and left Liverpool just one goal short of pulling off a sensational comeback. The stadium then virtually erupted as Dejan Lovren nodded home James Milner’s cross in the first minute of injury time to complete the fightback and earn the Reds a place in Friday’s semi-final draw, meaning Dortmund’s only realistic hopes of lifting a trophy this season are now via the DFB Cup.
