BVB claim 3-2 derby win over Schalke

Borussia Dortmund recorded a 3-2 home-victory over derby rivals FC Schalke 04 on matchday 12 in the Bundesliga, tightening their grip on second place in the standings. The Royal Blues have now failed to record a win from their last six competitive games.

79,954 spectators witnessed an intense and entertaining derby with the hosts controlling the action from the start. Schalke attempted to disrupt Dortmund's build-game early on, but only rarely managed to hold down possession their attacking third. Leroy Sané recorded their first shot after 20 minutes. Ten minutes later, Dortmund took the lead through Shinji Kagawa's header following a cross by Matthias Ginter on the half-hour mark.

Huntelaar double not enough

S04 striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar responded within three minutes to level the scores following an assist by new Germany international Leroy Sané, who has just earned his first call-up to Die Mannschaft. But the hosts, who were without Marco Reus due to injury, restored their advantage as Ginter once again made an impact on their attack by bagging their second shortly before half time.

Dortmund had more possession, won more challenges and looked more threatening going forward. Consequently, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his hot streak, scoring his 14th goal of the Bundesliga campaign and giving Dortmund a 3-1 lead. But again Schalke were able to respond as Huntelaar added a second goal to his tally. Schalke pushed for the equaliser in the closing stages of the match and BVB had to withstand some pressure before being able to celebrate the derby win.
