BVB, Bremen and Köln progress - Four underdogs cause upsets

A perfect start for the new Werder manager, Dortmund show their “cup competition” side, Timo Horn is Köln’s match-winner and there were four ‘cupsets’ – the first batch of the DFB Cup’s second-round fixtures really packed a punch.

New Bremen coach Viktor Skripnik saw the Bundesliga’s bottom side through to the last 16 of the competition thanks to a 2-0 win against third-division side Chemnitzer FC. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund’s poor form seems to be limited only to the Bundesliga, as they eased their way into the next round thanks to a 3-0 victory away at FC St. Pauli.

One of the evening’s shocks was caused by VfR Aalen, current 17th in the 2. Bundesliga. They hosted seventh-placed Bundesliga side Hannover 96 and deservedly won 2-0 after an abject display from Tayfun Korkut’s men, who had just secured a 1-0 away win at Dortmund in the league. Regionalliga side Kickers Offenbach also provided an upset, knocking out second-tier Karlsruher SC thanks to a 1-0 victory at the Stadion am Bieberer Berg.

Elsewhere, third-division leaders Arminia Bielefeld left Hertha BSC reeling after securing a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout win after the two sides had played out a goalless 120 minutes. 1. FC Kaiserslautern won the battle of the 2. Bundesliga sides, despatching of SpVgg Greuther Fürth courtesy of a 2-0 success. Dynamo Dresden were able to rely on goal-getter Justin Eilers in their meeting with second-tier VfL Bochum, with the striker netting in extra time to secure a 2-1 win.

Germany U21 goalkeeper Timo Horn was the hero for 1. FC Köln in their meeting with MSV Duisburg. The sides were locked at 0-0 after extra time and the Billy Goats’ number 1 – who set a new Bundesliga record this season by keeping a clean sheet in each of his first four top-flight matches – was able to make two saves in the resulting penalty shootout, paving the way for a 4-1 Köln win and a place in the last 16.
