BVB and Bayern cruise through

There were no surprises in the eight DFB-Pokal first-round games on Saturday afternoon. Current holders Borussia Dortmund overcame sixth-tier side 1. FC Rielasingen-Arlen 4-0, and last year’s other finalists Eintracht Frankfurt progressed to the next round thanks to a 3-0 win over Regionalliga outfit TuS Erndtebrück. The record cup winners Bayern München effortlessly beat third-division team Chemnitzer 5-0, and Europa League competitors 1. FC Köln blew away fifth-tier side Leher TS 5-0.

At the same time, 1. FSV Mainz 05 struggled past lower league side Lüneburger SK Hansa with a 3-1 win, and SC Freiburg survived a late scare from Regionalliga side VfB Germania Halberstadt to win 2-1. The two 2. Bundesliga sides, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Heidenheim both progressed to the last 32. The Red Devils beat the recently relegated Regionalliga side SV Eichende 4-0, while FCH also won 4-0 against recently promoted 3. Liga side SpVgg Unterhaching.

Aubameyang scores a hat-trick and Frankfurt win with ten men

BVB took the lead against Rieslasigen-Arlen on the twelve-minute mark, after Jan-Niklas Beste found Marc Bartra with a precision pass. Dortmund’s other goalscorer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, increased the lead from the penalty spot shortly before the break, and he completed his hat-trick in the second half with goals in the 55th and 80th minute.

Last year’s finalists Frankfurt had to play with ten men for 60 minutes of their match, after David Abraham was sent off for a cynical foul. Nevertheless, they took the lead in the 35th minute courtesy of Timothy Chandler’s strike. Mijat Gacinovic doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute, and Sébastien Haller scored four minutes later to seal the win.

Bayern München and 1. FC Köln show no mercy

In a sold-out Community4you-Arena in Chemnitz, clear favourites Bayern München got off the mark after 20 minutes courtesy of Robert Lewandowski. The teams went in at half time with the score 1-0, but in the second half, the floodgates opened as Coman, Ribery and Hummels got their names on the scoresheet, and Lewandowski bagged an almost inevitable brace in a 5-0 rout.

1. FC Köln also took their time getting the first goal in a packed out Nordseestadion; Leonardo Bittencourt followed up a saved shot and put his team ahead via the inside of the post. Frederik Sörensen soon got Köln’s second, almost putting the game beyond Leher TS before the break. Four minutes into the second half, a moment of madness saw Arwin Hashemi block a shot on the line with his hands, for which he was duly sent off. Jhon Cordoba made no mistake from the spot and converted for his first competitive goal for the club. Simon Zoller and Sehrou Guirassy added to the goals and Köln marched on as 5-0 winners.

Freiburg’s Nils Petersen plays against his father’s club

Nils Petersen put SC Freiburg on the road to victory against the Regionalliga club coached by his father, Germania Halberstadt. A twice-deflected shot from Nicolas Höfler doubled Freiburg’s lead shortly before the break, meaning Kay Michel ‘s goal back for Halberstadt minutes from time was too little too late.

Mainz celebrated an early lead in the 13th minute of their encounter with Lüneburger SK after Alexandru Maxim provided Yoshinori Muto with an accurate lobbed pass. Felix Vobejda’s deflected shot from distance levelled the match for LSK and increased the northern side’s hopes of causing an upset. Daniel Brosinski fired Mainz back into the lead just before the half-time whistle from the penalty spot though, and Muto wrapped up victory in the second half with his second goal of the day.

Beermann strikes twice for Heidenheim

1. FC Kaiserslautern initially struggled in Stadion Lohmühle in Lübeck until Osayamen Osawe put the ball away in the 17th minute from a scramble in the box, after which Baris Atik added to the hosts’ woes in the 39th minute. Osawe’s second goal in the 69th minute and Christoph Moritz’s strike five minutes from time sealed the victory for FCK.

Heidenheim had to wait until the 43rd minute to get on the scoreboard against SpVgg Unterhaching, with Timo Beermann getting his first goal of the day. The underdogs pressed for an equaliser, despite their centre-forward Stefan Schimmer being red-carded, but the victory went to the favourites from Ostalb. Unterhaching collapsed towards the end of the match as Beermann hit the target again, Robert Glatzel made it 3-0 and Kolja Pusch scored a fourth.
