Bresonik out of Women's EURO in Sweden

Linda Bresonik has been forced to withdraw from the squad for the UEFA Women's EURO in Sweden from 10 to 28 July. The Paris St Germain defender is out of action with an inflamed Achilles tendon in her left ankle. The player, capped 84 times so far, has been troubled by the injury for several months and was restricted to light training during the first pre-EURO get-together for the women's national team in Kaiserau last week.

"There's no sense in carrying on like this," commented the 29-year-old. "It's obviously not an easy situation for me, because I'd have been unbelievably happy to play in Sweden. However, my priority for now is to have surgery as soon as possible, so I'm completely free of pain again at last."

Neid: Another major setback

Silvia Neid made no secret of her disappointment. "It's another major blow for us," the Germany head coach said. "We now have to make do without Linda, an experienced player who we’ll badly miss at the EURO. Due to her problems, she wouldn't have been able to prepare intensively, and then there's the heavy load of games in the shortest imaginable time at a tournament. It would be irresponsible to play her at the European Championship."

Neid lamented the loss of other key players at this stage. "It's especially bad news, because after losing Viola Odebrecht, Verena Faisst and Alexandra Popp, Linda Bresonik is the fourth important player who can't be part of the tournament due to injury or illness."

Neid has declined to call up a replacement for Bresonik, as her preliminary squad still numbers 27 players. The final 23-strong squad for the European championship will be named after the upcoming friendly internationals, against Scotland in Essen on Saturday (live on ZDF from 3.30 pm CET), and against Canada in Paderborn on Wednesday (live on ARD from 6 pm CET).
