Borussia thrash Hertha

Borussia Mönchengladbach strengthened their Champions League aspirations by beating Hertha BSC 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. They climbed into fourth courtesy of the win and are now just three points behind the Berlin side. Thorgan Hazard (14’ and 80’) netted twice for the Foals, with André Hahn (60’), Patrick Herrmann (76’) and Ibrahima Traore (85’) grabbing the others.

Hazard opens the scoring

Borussia pressed impressively from the start and dominated the midfield battles throughout. They took the lead shortly before the 15 minute mark courtesy of Belgium international Thorgan Hazard. Youngster Mahmoud Dahoud played the attacker in and he coolly slotted the ball home to open the scoring.

The Foals continued to push after scoring and Hazard almost doubled the lead soon after but his header form Granit Xhaka’s corner drifted wide. The visitors’ first effort of the game came after 26 minutes. Vladimir Darida’s shot was deflected and landed at the feat of Vedad Ibisevic but Yann Sommer reacted well to prevent the striker from equalising. Hazard’s powerful effort in first half injury time caused Rune Jarstein problems but the Norway star pushed it to safety.

Goals galore after the break

The situation didn’t change much after the interval – Hertha were unable to cope with the pace and power of the Gladbach players. Their lead was doubled 15 minutes into the second period when André Hahn picked up Fabian Johnson’s pass before expertly firing it into the back of the net. Johnson himself almost scored seconds later but his powerful effort was tipped away by Jarstein.

The game was put to bed with 14 minutes to go when Herrmann tapped home the rebound after Hazard’s shot had been kept out by the keeper. The former Chelsea player completed his brace soon after – he beat two men before clinically converting from inside the box, albeit with the help of a deflection. The scoring was wrapped up soon after when Traoré fired home after great play from Stindl.
