Boateng: "We have to turn on the style on Sunday"

Die Mannschaft conceded a goal – and Jérôme Boateng isn’t happy about that. Die Mannschaft lost the game, and the defender is even less pleased. Despite this, the central defender hasn’t lost his inner calmness since the defeat to Ireland. Boateng spoke to DFB.de about the mistakes his team made in the game, and the consequences of the defeat.

Interviewer: Mr. Boateng, how do you explain Germany’s loss to Ireland? Why haven’t the World Champions already booked their ticket to the European Championship?

Jérôme Boateng: Because we lost the game. That shouldn’t happen – not in a game where we had so much possession and created so many good chances. As a team, we were lacking efficiency up top, as our finishing wasn’t brilliant. But when that’s how it is at the top of end of the pitch, you can’t afford to concede at the other end.

Interviewer: Did you get the feeling that the team were perhaps too complacent going into the game?

Boateng: No, not at all. We were all fully motivated. Like I said, what we were lacking was that final clinical touch.

Interviewer: Germany could now even finish as low as third in the group – you need to pick up at least one point against Georgia…

Boateng: I’m not interested in that. We want to win the game – and then I’ll know that we’re on the right track.

Interviewer: Is there a danger that Die Mannschaft will underestimate Georgia?

Boateng: There is never any reason to underestimate any opponent. We didn’t do that against Ireland either. We take each game very seriously, and always treat the other team with respect. That wasn’t the problem against Ireland, and we didn’t play that badly. We just can’t afford to make the mistakes that we did.

Interviewer: How did you see Ireland’s goal?

Boateng: I tried to stop it, but it was hard to get across. It was a long ball from the goalkeeper that was in the air for a long time. The fact that their striker then was allowed through on goal like that is obviously poor from our perspective. But we all know that we made that mistake as a team – and there’s nothing we can do about it now.

Interviewer: What does the team have to do in the next few days to be prepared for the Georgia game?

Boateng: We need to recuperate – and then we need to turn on the style on Sunday. The fans have earned it – and we only have ourselves to blame for not having booked our ticket already. We need to perform well, and obviously win the game.
