Boateng: "We have to be more clinical"

Boateng: We weren’t outplayed, so I would say it was rather an indication of how good we can be this season. We gave more to the game and then lost on penalties. We didn’t lose 4-1 after 90 minutes. We just need to keep working hard.

Question: Work hard in what areas exactly?

Boateng: We still have some time, but we need to work on our freshness. I'm confident that we will have a successful start to our Cup (August 9th against FC Nöttingen) and league campaign.

Question: What has been your impression of new signing Arturo Vidal?

Boateng: He was received well and immediately found his place in the team. Arturo has outstanding qualities but he is behind in terms of fitness having just returned from his holiday. Once he is fully fit, he will be a great asset to us. We all know the type of player he is and I'm sure that he will be good for us.

Defending Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München failed to collect the first official title of the season, losing 6-5 on penalties against VfL Wolfsburg in the Supercup final. FC Bayern may consider themselves unlucky, having conceded a late equaliser, but their loss cannot only be blamed on bad luck - at least according to Jérôme Boateng. The 26-year-old World Champion spoke with DFB.de about the defeat, Bayern's progress in pre-season and his new team mate Arturo Vidal.

Question: Mr. Boateng, what is your verdict on this defeat?

Jérôme Boateng: We clearly had the better chances and should've already been in the lead at half time. In the end we lost on penalties after we conceded a last minute equaliser. It's very, very irritating and shouldn’t happen. But there is nothing we can do about that now. We have to learn from it.

Question: The Supercup was more to FC Bayern, than just a good friendly match right?

Boateng: Yes and you can tell that by the fact that we played well and were clearly the better team - just look at the chances we created. Wolfsburg maybe had one or two chances throughout the 90 minutes, while we had five or six clear-cut chances. We simply have to make more of our chances and be more clinical in front of the goal.

Question: Is the defeat irritating, because you've now lost the Supercup three times in a row under Pep Guardiola?

Boateng: This is not about the coach. Our coach wasn’t the only one who wanted to win the game, the entire team did. Every single player wanted to win and we are all disappointed that it didn’t work out. But there is no need to spend a lot of time dwelling on the defeat. We have to be ready for our Bundesliga start (August 14th against Hamburger SV).

Question: Did the game give you an indication as to how much of a title rival Wolfsburg will be this season and in the years to come?

Boateng: We weren’t outplayed, so I would say it was rather an indication of how good we can be this season. We gave more to the game and then lost on penalties. We didn’t lose 4-1 after 90 minutes. We just need to keep working hard.
