Boateng: "We can still turn it around"

Bayern München are facing the threat of elimination following their 3-1 defeat away at FC Porto in the Champions League quarter final. The German record champions conceded three goals in the north of Portugal, thanks to three individual blunders in defence, including one from Jerome Boateng, who set up Thiago’s only goal for Bayern to make it 2-1 at the time. The 26 year old German world cup winner spoke with DFB.de about the reasons for the defeat and his sides prospects for the second leg next Tuesday (20:45 CEST) in the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Question: Mr Boateng, how would you assess the defeat in Porto?

Boateng: Obviously things went very wrong, right from the start. It’s difficult when you go 2-0 down so quickly. Then we fought back, but we ran out of steam a little in the second half. Then we concede a terrible third goal, I hold my hands up for that one. It’s a real shame for us because we put up a strong fight and worked hard.

Question: Do you have any explanations for the mistake?

Boateng:It’s a shame it happened, but we can’t change it now.

Question: What did Pep Guardiola say to you from the touchline at 2-0?

Boateng: He told us not to panic and to continue playing relaxed football. And that we should continue to play our game and create chances.

Question: What is the strategy now going into the return leg in Munich on Tuesday?

Question: What is the strategy now going into the return leg in Munich on Tuesday?

Boateng: It’s important that we move on from this defeat as a team. On Tuesday we still have a chance to correct this result. Even though it’ll be very difficult, we can do it. We must do all we can to put in a good performance in Munich.

Question: How important will it be to have Bastian Schweinsteiger back on Tuesday?

Boateng: Of course we are hoping that he’ll be back. It’s really difficult at the moment when we have to change players as we have so many missing. We don’t have many options but the team must come together.

Question: It was a strange start to the day with the news that Jürgen Klopp will be leaving Dortmund at the end of the season, followed by Bayern’s unexpected defeat. How did you follow the news about Klopp?

Boateng: That doesn’t concern us so we weren’t bothered with it.
