Boateng: “The team showed what we’re made of”

FC Bayern München are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the fourth year in a row after turning around the 3-1 first leg defeat by beating Portuguese champions FC Porto 6-1 at the Allianz Arena.

After the “magical night” (as it was described by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge), Jérôme Boateng spoke about the game, his goal, the criticism from the last few days and the possibility of doing the triple.

Question: Mr Boateng, was that a game in which everything happened?

Jérôme Boateng: Yes you could say that. We’ve put some tough days behind us. The team showed great character and what we’re made of.

Question: What role did the mistakes from the first leg play?

Boateng: Clearly we had some making up to do and you saw that from the first minute to the last minute. We deserved to win and by that margin too. We did brilliantly.

Question: You also defended well tonight.

Boateng: Yes things went well at the back. The goal we conceded was annoying. At times already this season we’ve let things slip at times and that shouldn’t happen.

Question: Did the team start to wobble after conceding?

Boateng: What does wobble mean? Things happen quickly in football. So quickly that Porto could have scored when we did. Therefore, we had to keep our concentration.

Question: How bigger part did the midfield play with so many small players like Thiago, Philipp Lahm and Mario Götze?

Boateng: They did very well. You saw that we need players like that. They were very good on the ball and gave us security.

Question: Was your goal to make it 2-0 the icing on the cake?

Boateng: We gave our all from the off. My goal was obviously very important. I’m very happy that I could help the team. Things continued to go well after that apart from a few minutes in the second half where we fell asleep.

Question: How important was the support from the fans?

Boateng: They urged us on from the first minute to the last. It helped us a lot and we have to thank them for that.

Question: However their expectations are looking ahead to the treble.

Boateng: That has to be the case as they are our fans. They believed in us after the first leg even though there were a lot of critics.

Question: How much confidence will this win give you for your upcoming games in the cup and the Champions League?

Boateng: It’s exactly what we wanted. We’re still in every tournament and things are looking good in the Bundesliga. In the cup we have a tough home game against Dortmund coming up. We have to continue to work hard. Hopefully a few players will be back and then I think that we can be optimistic.
