Boateng: “Playing alongside Hummels keeps getting better”

Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels won the World Cup together in Rio and now form FC Bayern München’s centre back duo. After nine matchdays in the league, Bayern lead the standings and one reason for the success is the partnership of Boateng and Hummels. DFB.de spoke with Boateng on the progress the team has been making, their games so far and the important Champions League encounter at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.

Interviewer: Mr. Boateng, what do you think of the 3-1 win in Augsburg?

Jerome Boateng: We played well in first half and scored two early goals. We had a good control on the game apart from maybe one or two simple losses of possession. We made a decent start to the second half, but towards the end we started to slack a bit. We conceded a silly goal, but overall we can be satisfied with our performance.

Interviewer: Was this an important victory ahead of the Champions League match at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday?

Boateng: It’s always important to win and when you’re playing well, it’s good for your confidence. It was certainly an important win in regard to Tuesday.

Interviewer: What do you expect from the game on Tuesday?

Boateng: It won’t be an easy match. I think it will be a different match in Eindhoven compared to when we played at home. Of course we want to win and keep performing well in the Champions League.

Interviewer: How difficult will it be to finish top of the group?

Interviewer: How difficult will it be to finish top of the group?

Boateng: Firstly, we’ll have to win this upcoming match. We still have a chance to play Atletico Madrid in Munich. They deserve to lead the group right now. We just have to win our games.

Interviewer: Has your team play with Mats Hummels improved over the last few weeks?

Boateng: We haven’t just started playing together obviously, but I think that it keeps improving. Of course its different now compared to when we only played with each other for Germany. But I think I can play well with either Mats, Javi Martinez or Holger Badstuber.

Interviewer: What has Holger Badstuber’s progress been like?

Boateng: Holger is making progress and he’s been doing well in our training sessions. We hope that he can continue this progress and that he will be able to help us again on a regular basis. He’s a great guy and a fantastic football player.
