Boateng aiming to return to first team training in April

World Cup winner Jérôme Boateng is optimistic despite his serious injury. He is hoping to be fit in time for the end of season run-in, the Champions League final and the European Championships in France. “My aim is to be back training with the first team in April. I don’t want to put myself under pressure, but things are looking good,” Said the Bayern Munich centre-back, at the opening of the new Bayern fan shop at the training complex on Säbener Straße today.

The 27-year-old stated that he is “really happy” with his recent rehabilitation work and also said, “I hope that I can increase my workload in the next week. I am feeling positive.” He continued, saying, “First I will get back on the pitch for Bayern and then obviously I want to play in EURO 2016.”

Boateng suffered a serious adductor muscle injury in Bayern’s 2-1 win over Hamburg in the first game after the Winter break. At the moment he is undergoing treatment and can only run in water. It’s all very unusual for Boateng, “The fact that that I can’t do what I love at the moment has meant it can’t be that great to spend time with me right now,” said the Germany international. He explained that it has been hard for him, “To be patient.”

People have been talking about Bayern Munich’s “dwarf” defence since Boateng’s injury, but he doesn't see it as much of a problem ahead of Bayern’s Champions League last 16 clash with Juventus. “As a small defender you can still make it hard for a larger player to win the header.” His advice, “We shouldn't give away too many set-pieces.”
