BMI Security Conference in Rio de Janeiro

In cooperation with the Brazilian Interior Ministry, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) organised a security conference for sports events that took place in Rio de Janeiro from 16-20 June 2012. Security experts of both nations, including the respective police forces and non-government professionals, talked about how to ensure the security of international sports events, with a particular focus on major football tournaments such as the FIFA WC 2006 in Germany, the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa and the UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

The participants, most of whom will be responsible for the security at the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil, discussed the experiences made during previous tournaments, highlighting one of the most successful events in football history, the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

In his capacity of Managing Director of DFB Consulting, Ulrich Wolter presented the structure and the main features of the security concept of 2006 and the experiences gained by the LOC. Recalling the non-violent, peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere during the event, Wolter said this was in no small part thanks to the overall security concept, whose key guideline was "create as much security as necessary while at the same time impose as few restrictions as possible."
