Blatter to remain FIFA president

Joseph S. Blatter has been voted president of world football’s governing body FIFA for a further four years. The 79-year-old Swiss would have needed a second round of votes to beat his challenger Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan, but the 39-year-old withdrew his candidacy.

Blatter received 133 of the 206 valid ballots in the first round of voting, almost twice as many as Ali’s 73, but still short of the 140 needed for a majority. Blatter has been FIFA president since 1998 and will now begin his fifth term.
