Bitter 3-0 defeat for Gladbach in Berlin

It was a difficult night for Borussia Mönchengladbach, as they kicked off the Bundesliga’s matchday 10 with a 3-0 defeat away to Hertha BSC. They also lost Germany internationals Patrick Herrmann and Christoph Kramer to an ankle injury and a red card respectively.

Salomon Kalou was the hero for the hosts, as he netted a hat-trick to ensure the points remained in the capital. The result sees Hertha climb up to third spot in the table for tonight at least, while Gladbach remain in 12th place after their winless run stretched to five games.

The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute, when Germany U21 international Mitchell Weiser crossed in from the right towards Kalou, who managed to get away from Nico Elvedi and head in the opener. The most damaging moments for the Foals came shortly after the half-hour mark, when Herrmann sustained a nasty-looking ankle injury after Vedad Ibisevic unfortunately fell on him.

His side were still in shock and still a man light when they conceded a second goal, as Elvedi’s clearance rebounded off Jannik Vestergaard and towards Kalou. The Ivorian provided a typically composed finish. Matters got even worse for Borussia six minutes later when Kramer fouled Fabian Lustenberger and received his second yellow card.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Gladbach played with heart after the interval and looked the more likely side to add to the scoreline, but Fabian Johnson, Vestergaard and Lars Stindl were all denied by Hertha’s in-form goalkeeper Rune Jarstein. As the Foals threw caution to the wind, there was still time for the hosts to strike one more blow. Weiser played Kalou through in front of goal, and he found the net to complete his treble.
