Bittencourt: "We got our reward today"

After the game the players have to face the media. Matchday 21 was an exciting one for all involved, but what did the players think? We caught up with Julian Draxler, Ron-Robert Zieler, Jonathan Tah, Timo Werner and Leonardo Bittencourt to get their thoughts on the games.

Mainz 2-1 Schalke

Johannes Geis: The first half wasn’t good from us. We put a lot right in the second half and moved the ball forward a lot better. In the end it came down to small details that weren’t quite right. Mainz were strong, they had prepared well and then had that little bit of luck on their side to get them the win. It’s always difficult to play in Mainz. We saw after the restart that there was something in this game for us. That makes the defeat all the more disappointing. In the last two league games we were fantastic. It’s normal, I think, to suffer a setback every so often. We need to get back to winning ways when VfB Stuttgart come to town next Saturday. First, we will concentrate on our Europa League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Hannover

Ron-Robert Zieler: The team were organised. It’s a shame that we took nothing from the game. We had the feeling right from the start that we could get a point or, perhaps, a surprise win. I think we did everything we could’ve to achieve that. Nobody was lacking in confidence today. We put up a lot of resistance and won a lot of balls. We looked to get forward with our fast wingers. Artur [Sobiech] did well but unfortunately we didn’t have any luck in front of goal.

Wolfsburg 2-0 Ingolstadt

Maximilian Arnold: We know that Ingolstadt are a very compact and difficult team. We are delighted to have won.

Julian Draxler: It got easier with the goal. It’s not how we imagined the game to pan out but we are just happy to get the points and will now try to build on it.

Köln 3-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Leonardo Bittencourt: We rewarded ourselves today. After going one down I had no doubt that the team wouldn’t let their heads fall. We just keep going and try to play our game for the full 90 minutes.

Yannick Gerhardt: I didn’t know what to do when the ball went in. I was surprised. When Ujah passed I checked if anyone else was running in. In my head I wanted to take the ball a lot better but in the end it was good that I took my time.

Stuttgart 2-0 Hertha Berlin

Timo Werner: We forced our luck in this game. If we continue to play that way, we will continue to win points. We can’t afford to over-estimate the win or our situation though. Things are tight in the table, so you can quickly find yourself going up or going down again. We will continue to focus on what’s to be done.

Darmstadt 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen

Jonathan Tah: The game was brutally hard, tiring and intense. Especially the second half. We realised at half time that it would be difficult to play them because Darmstadt were just holding strong. After the interval we stepped up our game, got more stuck into the challenges and fought harder for the second ball. We are happy that we got all three points.

Julian Brandt: It feels great to have got the winner, I am very happy about it. But even if that was the case every week, I am just happy to get the win. It wasn’t easy to turn the game around and the three points are good for us.
