Birgit Prinz named DFB honorary captain

The DFB Congress in Nuremberg has appointed Birgit Prinz as an honorary captain of the women's national team. As part of the ceremony at the Nuremberg Conference Center, DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach presented a certificate of appointment to Prinz, who becomes the second woman after Bettina Wiegmann to receive the honour.

"Birgit Prinz was an absolutely exceptional player. She did so much for the reputation and development of women's football and is an idol for many girls across the country," said DFB President Niersbach.

Prinz is the most successful women's footballer in the DFB’s history, having won a record-breaking 214 caps for her country, scoring 128 goals. She was a two-time world champion and five-time European champion, won three bronze medals at the Olympic games and was named “Women's World Player of the Year” three times.

At club level, Prinz won nine German Championships and won the DFB Cup ten times. She retired after the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
