Bielefeld knock out fourth-tier Walldorf on penalties

After completing upsets against Bochum and Darmstadt in the previous rounds, fourth-tier outsiders Astoria Walldorf didn’t look fazed by the on-paper difficult task of hosting 2. Bundesliga team Arminia Bielefeld. There were few chances in the early phases of the game, but the favourites and three-time DFB Cup finalists soon started to put the Regionalliga-Südwest’s current tenth-place side under pressure. Christopher Nöthe saw a header just go over top, before David Ulm turned a cross narrowly wide of the target. Astoria goalkeeper Jürgen Rennar then did well to save from Nöthe and Fabian Klos.

Arminia continued to have the lion’s share of the game in the second half, and were soon rewarded for their attacking efforts. Tom Schütz’s whipped a free kick in from the left of the box which picked up more and more pace as it cleared everyone’s head, and nestled in the very top corner of the goal. Whoever thought that would end Walldorf’s challenge though, was very mistaken. The underdogs had two immediate chances to level the scores, but Hesl saved brilliantly both times from Marcel Carl.

Penalties required

Bielefeld started to drop deeper into their half, which ultimately led to them conceding the equaliser, although it was something of an unusual goal. Pascal Pellowski’s long throw was headed on straight into the back of the net by the unchallenged Carl. Both sides then didn’t want to risk conceding in the final 12 minutes, and the game inevitably headed into extra time.

Little happened in the first 15 minutes, but things got a little chaotic after the change of ends. Just 19 minutes after being brought on, Keanu Staude was shown already his second yellow card to reduce Arminia to ten men. There was also a competition first in the 117th minute, as Walldorf made a fourth substitution, as per the newly introduced rule. There were no more goal chances though and penalties were required. Rennar saved Klos’ opening penalty for Fürth to hand Astoria the advantage, but Nicolai Groß fired wide to send the shootout into sudden death, which Bielefeld won at the first time of asking. Hesl saved from Jonas Kiermeier, and Stephan Salger’s conversion sent the 2. Bundesliga side through to the quarterfinals.
