Berti Vogts new coach of Nigerian "Super Eagles"

Berti Vogts, former player and coach of the German national team, has signed a three-year-contract with the Nigeria Football Association (NFA). 60-year-old Vogts takes over the position as head coach of the "Super Eagles". Vogts will start his tenure with the 1996 Olympic champion on March 1. "What a great challenge. I'm very excited about this opportunity", said Vogts in a newspaper interview. "I'll fly to Nigeria later this month, but my permanent residence will remain in Europe." Hans-Hubert Vogts had won the FIFA World Cup as a player in 1974. He had last worked as national coach of Scotland from March 2002 until November 2004.

Nigeria will face qualifying games for the Africa Cup 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification round, and Vogts' performance will be measured against the results of these important games. "Obviously, competing at the World Cup is our big dream", said Vogts. His predecessor Augustine Eguavoen could rejoin the team as Vogts' assistant.

Next up for Nigeria is a game against Ghana, scheduled for February 8 in London. Nigeria had failed to make the trip to Germany in 2006, when they succumbed to Angola. The "Super Eagles" are currently in 9th place in the Official FIFA World ranking.

According to the NFA, the contract will be signed at the end of February. "Berti is a real gentleman, and he believes in the future of Nigerian football", said NFA President Al Hadji Sani Lulu. "His experience will help us to get Nigerian football another step ahead."

Vogts has played 96 games for Germany. His biggest success as a coach was winning the 1996 European Championship with the DFB team, for which he served as head coach from 1990 to 1998. Before taking over the Scottish team, he had worked as National coach in Kuwait. His sole stint in the Bundesliga was in 2000/2001 as Bayer Leverkusen's coach. created by js
