Benkarth between the sticks for England clash

Germany face England tonight in Dusiburg (18:00 CET) and Silvia Neid has already named her goalkeeper for the fixture. The head coach announced earlier that Freiburg keeper Laura Benkarth will make her international debut in the game. Regular starter Almuth Schult is out injured (hairline fracture of the foot).

Neid will have to name a much changed starting XI for the match as Alexandra Popp, Pauline Bremer, Saskia Bartusiak and Bianca Schmidt are all also absent. Tonight’s game is more than just a number of fixture – it sees the sides who finished fourth (Germany) and third (England) at this year’s World Cup come to blows once again. It promises to be a high quality game and Germany are boosted by Dzsenifer Marozsán’s return.

The midfielder has been struggling with ankle problems of late. “We’re delighted that she’s back,” explained Neid. “Her creativity and knowledge are important to this side. It’s also important for her to be back in the squad and getting some minutes – after all, she’s been out for quite a while.”

Neid: Revenge is not on the cards

Felicitas Rauch (1. FFC Turbine Potsdam) is in then senior squad for the first time. The 19-year-old defender was part of the squad who won the U20 World Cup in Canada last year and is the latest in a long line of talented youngsters to make the step up. She expects this evening’s game to be a real challenge: “England have progressed a lot in recent years. We’re looking forward to playing in such a tough game.”

England won the recent World Cup third-place play-off 1-0 after extra time – Germany’s only defeat in the 21 meetings of the sides. However, “revenge is not on the cards,” remarked. “They finished third and we were fourth. That was frustrating so our aim is to perform to the best of our ability.”
