Bellarabi extends contract with Leverkusen until 2020

Bayer Leverkusen announced this morning that Karim Bellarabi has extended his contract with the Bundesliga club until 30th June 2020. His contract was originally set to expire in summer 2017.

“I’ve developed a lot under the guidance of manager Roger Schmidt this season,” said 24-year-old Bellarabi after signing the contract. “I’ve become a much better player under his guidance and in his system. In previous years, I’ve had to battle injuries and I spent time playing for Eintracht Braunschweig on loan, but even then, there was still the sense that Bayer 04 believed in me and that I could play a part for them here. The faith Roger Schmidt has put in me is something I’ve never had before. I will do all I can to repay him and Bayer 04 Leverkusen for that."

Völler: "Karim has become a top player"

Bayer 04 sporting director Rudi Völler was very pleased. "We signed Karim at a young age from Braunschweig, where he had been playing in the third division. Even though he was out injured for a long time at the start, he never lost sight of his goal to succeed with us. When he returned from Braunschweig at the start of the season, all our expectations were exceeded. He’s not become a Germany international this season under Roger Schmidt for nothing. With his exceptional ability, Karim Bellarabi has turned into a true top player here in Leverkusen.

Germany manager Joachim Löw handed Bellarabi his international debut on the 11th October 2014 in a 2-0 European Championship qualifying defeat to Poland in Warsaw. The 24-year-old has made 21 appearances for Leverkusen so far this season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.
