Bayern vs. Wolfsburg: Duel between previous cup winners

When FC Bayern München host VfL Wolfsburg in the DFB Cup last 16 this Tuesday (20:45 CET) at the Allianz-Arena, anything but a victory for the home side would be a shock. FCB have won 30 of their 32 cup games since the 2011/2012 season and have won the title three times in that period (2013, 2014 and 2016).

But VfL Wolfsburg’s record in the cup is also impressive. VfL were crowned DFB Cup champions for the first time in 2015. After Borussia Dortmund had defeated Bayern in the semi-final, Wolfsburg beat BVB in the final and celebrated their second major trophy in the club’s history after also winning the Bundesliga in 2009.

Bayern: Five games, five cup victories

Wolfsburg met Bayern in the cup five months later and it proved to be an early exit for the champions. Bayern ran out 3-1 winners in the second round against VfL as a goal from Douglas Costa and Thomas Müller’s brace put then Pep Guardiola’s side through.

Wolfsburg are spoilt for choice in terms personnel for this tie and have nothing to lose against the reigning Bundesliga champions. “We have to be relaxed, then we might be able to achieve something,” said head coach Valerien Ismael. Bayern head coach Carlo Ancelotti has warned his team ahead of the match. “We can still improve our game and be more direct in getting the ball forward. Possession alone is not enough.” Bayern will be without the injured Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery.
