Bayern vs. BVB in the DFB-Pokal once again

It’s a clash between the record DFB-Pokal winners and the reigning champions in the German “Der Klassiker”. It’s the highlight of the round of 16 and fans from all corners of the world will be watching the action in the Allianz Arena when Bayern Munich face Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday (KO 20:45 CET) in the DFB-Pokal tie.

The meeting of the top clubs will divide the fans clearly. World Champion Mats Hummels has already spoken of the game as a “final” and his fellow defender Jérôme Boateng is chomping at the bit to play Germany teammate Mario Götze. “See you soon, Mario,” he tweeted with reference to his friend.

Borussia Dortmund travel to the match with a new head coach: former FC Köln coach Peter Stöger has held the reins at BVB since December instead of Dutchman Peter Bosz. With two wins in the Bundesliga, the Austrian coach has enjoyed a perfect start to life at BVB.

BVB are Bayern’s cup Achilles heel

The match will be the 11th meeting between the sides in the DFB-Pokal. The Munich side have only faced Hamburger SV and Schalke 04 on more occasions in the DFB-Pokal and BVB have faced no side more than Bayern. The head-to-head record leans slightly in favour of FC Bayern. The club from Säbener Street have defeated Borussia six times, while Dortmund have won four times. BVB are somewhat feared opponents for Bayern in the DFB-Pokal: no other club has managed to knock FCB out of the cup four times.

Peculiarly, the two teams have met in the DFB-Pokal every year since 2012 – no other game has been drawn in as many consecutive years in the DFB-Pokal. The last meeting took place in last season’s semi-finals, in which Bayern were beaten 3-2 in front of their home crowd. Germany international Marco Reus sent BVB into the lead, before Javi Martínez and World Cup winner Mats Hummels turned the game in Bayern’s favour before the half-time whistle. However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembélé both found the net in the second half to give Dortmund an away win.

Dortmund with remarkable away record

BVB are currently enjoying a remarkable run away from home in the DFB-Pokal, namely 17 wins in a row on the road. The last loss came in the quarter-finals of the 2012-13 season, when a Jupp Heynckes-managed FC Bayern beat them 1-0 in Dortmund. Bayern will take heed of a Borussia side strong on the road.

Both teams have had both close and more one-sized DFB-Pokal matches so far this season. Bayern run out 5-0 winners against Chemnitzer FC in the first round and beat Leipzig 5-4 in a penalty shootout. BVB defeated FC Rielasingen-Arlen 4-0 and FC Magdeburg 5-0.
