Bayern vs. BVB: All you need to know

Bayern München face Borussia Dortmund in a top-of-the-table clash this evening (17:30 CEST). Thomas Tuchel’s BVB side are unbeaten this season, as are Pep Guardiola’s Bayern side. Should his side win, they will establish a seven point gap between themselves and Dortmund. DFB.de takes a look at what promises to be a thrilling match.

Form: Both sides head into the game unbeaten. Bayern have a 100% record in all competitions so far this season but Dortmund have stumbled a bit recently, having drawn their last three games (one of which came in the Europa League). Tuchel rotated his team ahead of the game against PAOK in Greece - Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gündogan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Shinji Kagawa and Sokratis were all rested ahead of this weekend’s crunch clash. Going into the game, Bayern are four points clear of their rivals.

Strikers: Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are in great form this term. Bayern’s Lewandowski tops the goalscoring charts with 10, which is in no small part down to his record-breaking five-goal hail against Wolfsburg. He also netted a treble in the Champions League, meaning he has scored 10 goals in his last three competitive games. Dortmund’s Aubameyang is hot on his heels with nine strikes. The Gabon international is also in the history books – he is the only player in the history of the Bundesliga to score at least one goal on each of the opening seven matchdays of a campaign.

Attack: It’s only logical that the teams with the highest scoring individuals top the scoring charts. Bayern (23) and Dortmund (21) have scored considerably more goals than any other Bundesliga side this season.

Defence: The teams are also tough to beat at the back. Bayern have conceded the fewest amount of goals this term (3); Dortmund have let in six. The sides are separated by BVB’s local rivals Schalke 04, who have conceded five times this season to date.

Recent history: Bayern haven’t always had it their own way in this fixture in recent years. Dortmund lifted the title in 2011 and 2012 – during the two campaigns they inflicted four consecutive defeats upon their rivals. The following years were a more balanced affair but Guardiola’s men did do the double over BVB last term, although they were knocked out of the DFB Cup by their rivals at the semi-final stage (Dortmund lost the final 3-1 to Wolfsburg).

Thomas Tuchel’s debut: Tuchel will be involved in “Der Klassiker” as a head coach for the first time this evening. He has already faced Bayern 10 times, all of which came whilst he was Mainz boss. Tuchel has beaten the Bavarians on three occasions and there was one draw, meaning that Bayern won the other six encounters.
