Bayern thump Arsenal, late penalty sinks Leverkusen

FC Bayern München more than got revenge for their loss away to Arsenal two weeks ago and look well set to reach the last 16 of the Champions League. Led by midfield maestro Thiago, Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed the English FA Cup winners 5-1 on Wednesday night to keep themselves top of Group F.

Robert Lewandowski, World Champion Thomas Müller, David Alaba and Arjen Robben – with his very first touch after coming on – all scored for the record German champions, helping secure their eighth straight home win in Europe’s elite club competition. Arsenal’s sole strike came courtesy of an Olivier Giroud volley.

While Guardiola’s side (9 points) are looking to confirm their place in the knockout stages when they meet Greek champions Olympiacos on 24th November, Arsenal with World Cup winners Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil could end up crashing out at the group stage for the first time since 2000.

Another Leverkusen thriller against Roma

Bayer Leverkusen’s hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League’s have taken a hit after yet another topsy-turvy meeting with AS Roma. It was a nightmare start for the Bundesliga outfit, but they came back, only to be beaten 3-2 by Antonio Rüdiger’s Roma side courtesy of a late goal. Bayer 04 now need results to go their way if they are to reach the next round.

Miralem Pjanic netted the winner for the Italians from the spot in the 80th minute, with Ömer Toprak sent off for his part in the penalty being awarded. Goals from Admir Mehmedi and Javier Hernandez had seen Leverkusen able to forget about their nightmare first half, which saw Mohamed Salah and Edin Dzeko fire the hosts into a 2-0 lead.

After suffering their second defeat in four games, Leverkusen now sit behind FC Barcelona (10) and Roma (5) in Group E with four points. They need to get a victory against BATE Borisov when the sides meet on 24th November, before a tricky trip to defending champions Barcelona awaits in their final group-stage fixture.
