Bayern oust Wolfsburg with narrow win

Bayern München are one step closer to a 19th DFB Cup title. The record champions and record cup winners beat VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 in the round of 16 to progress to the quarterfinals for the tenth consecutive season.

Douglas Costa gave Bayern a deserved lead after just 17 minutes when his strike from the edge of the box took a slight deflection off former Bayern midfielder Luiz Gustavo on its way into the back of the net.

Bayern unconvincing, but still dominant

23 games, 22 wins, one draw: Bayern’s home record against Wolfsburg was almost perfect going into tonight’s game and the 24th win only continues their dominance against the Wolves in Munich. The Bundesliga leaders dominated the affair from the first minute and had the visitors pegged in their own half penalty area for much of the first half. Arjen Robben was the first to test Koen Casteels with an acrobatic volley from ten yards out (9’).

After Bayern had taken the lead, the 2015 cup winners found it even more difficult to break forward and push for the equaliser. While the visitors took few risks, the same could almost be said of the hosts, who created few clear-cut chances for all their possession.

The second half played out in a similar fashion to the first, minus the goal. Bayern remained the dominant side, albeit without the goals to show for it. The Wolves, with January signing Yunus Malli entereing the match as a half-time substitute, were far too tame going forward. This changed in the final stages off the match, however, with Malli and Daniel Didavi both forcing stunning saves from World Goalkeeper of the Year, Manuel Neuer.
