Bayern München and Sand join Wolfsburg in quarter-finals

Bayern München and SC Sand followed defending champions VfL Wolfsburg into the Women’s DFB Cup quarterfinals. German champions FC Bayern recorded a clear 8-0 win over fourth division side DJK Arminia Ibbenbüren, while Sand managed a 3-0 victory at second division side SV 67 Weinberg. Wolfsburg had already secured their spot in the quarter finals on Friday, thanks to a 2-0 victory over Arminia Bielefeld.

It was the biggest game of the year for DJK Arminia Ibbenbüren. “We are really looking forward to this encounter. We will put in a courageous performance and see what’s possible,” DJK coach Frank Schlichter said before the game. But the current Allianz-Women’s-Bundesliga table-toppers left no doubt as to which team would progress to the quarter-finals, leading 2-0 just nine minutes into the game, with Dutch international Vivianne Miedema netting both goals.

Bayern piled on the pressure but they didn’t score again until the 33rd minute, when Sara Däbritz found the back of the net. After the break, Däbritz and Miedema both added a goal to their tallies, while Katharina Baunach, Simone Laudehr and Carina Wenninger completed the 8-0 thrashing.

Sand took the lead in Weinberg from Austrian international Nina Burger after twelve minutes. A brace from Verena Aschauer in the second half allowed Sand to cruise to their 3-0 win.
