Bayern lose 2-1 at home to Real

One missed penalty, a red card from Javi Martinez and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo – FC Bayern München’s chances of reaching the last four of the Champions League now look slim as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Real Madrid. Arturo Vidal’s bullet header put Bayern ahead after 25 minutes but the Chilean then blasted a penalty over the bar in what would prove to be a deeply costly miss.

Real Madrid were a different team in the second half and Cristiano Ronaldo got Los Blancos back on level terms just two minutes after the restart. Javi Martinez’s second yellow card 15 minutes later meant the home side were up against it and despite a handful of world-class saves from Germany international Manuel Neuer, Ronaldo slipped a second through the keeper’s legs, giving his side that precious second away goal and putting them in prime position as they head back for the second leg in Madrid.

BVB lose out despite battling performance

Yet BVB showed great strength, both in terms of their football and character, reducing a two-goal deficit twice through Dembele and then a sublime finish from Shinji Kagawa.

The Dortmund players warmed up in front of the 74,000 fans at Signal-Iduna-Park wearing shirts of Marc Bartra in solidarity with their fellow teammate, who was injured in last night’s explosions. BVB coach Thomas Tuchel had told his players that they were free to miss out the game if they felt necessary but they all made themselves available.

Outstanding Neuer cannot stop Ronaldo

Real go off to a dream start in the second half of proceedings. The The Ballon d'Or winner was on hand to meet Carvajal’s cross and volley in to the bottom corner. However the Portuguese European champion eventually found the winner to give Real a vital second away goal.
