Bayern leave it late to draw with Hertha; Gnabry guides Bremen to victory

Bayern salvage point with late equaliser – Gnabry leads Werder to victory

FC Bayern München avoided their second defeat of the season with a late equaliser at Hertha BSC to salvage a 1-1 draw on Bundesliga matchday 21. Robert Lewandowski scored deep into stoppage time after Vedad Ibisevic had given the hosts a first-half lead. Borussia Dortmund earned a comfortable 3-0 victory against VfL Wolfsburg, while TSG Hoffenheim recorded a 2-0 win against bottom side Darmstadt 98.

Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a 2-0 home-defeat to Ingolstadt and thus drop back to sixth place in the standings. Germany international Serge Gnabry guided SV Werder Bremen to a 2-0 victory at FSV Mainz 05.

Lewandowski scores late

Three days after their impressive performance in the 5-1 Champions League victory over Arsenal, Bayern looked to demonstrate their dominance over Hertha but rarely managed to create danger going forward. Instead, Hertha took the lead after 21 minutes when Vedad Ibisevic converted from close range after a set-piece by Marvin Plattenhardt.

Bayern looked to increase the pressure in the second half and coach Carlo Ancelotti introduced Robert Lewandowski to the game. The pressure rose on Hertha in the final minutes of the game and eventually Lewandowski was able to poke home the equaliser from close range six minutes into added time.

Dortmund’s attack shines against Wolfsburg

Borussia Dortmund, with World Champions André Schürrle and Matthias Ginter as well as Marco Reus in the starting XI, delivered a true attacking spectacle against Wolfsburg and forced keeper Diego Benaglio into three quality saves inside the opening ten minutes. Ten minutes later the hosts took the lead, when a cross from Lukas Piszczek took a deflection from Jeffrey Burma and nestled in the back of the net.

More chances followed for BVB but the spectators had to wait until the second half, when Piszczek nodded home a free-kick to give Dortmund a 2-0 lead after 48 minutes. Piszczek was also involved in Dortmund’s third goal, as the Polish international’s cross found Dembele, who added a third goal with a header.

Gnabry on target for Werder

Werder produced a strong performance in Mainz after several poor outings in recent weeks. A free-kick from Zlatko Junuzovic allowed Serge Gnabry to score the opener after 16 minutes and put his team on the path to victory. Just seven minutes later new signing Thomas Delanay scored with a direct free-kick to double Werder’s advantage. In the end, Werder managed to keep a clean sheet for just the second time this season as they collected vital three points.

Hoffenheim struggled with Darmstadt’s defensive approach for long spells in Sinsheim. At the start of the second half Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann introduced a second striker to the game in Andrej Kramaric which immediately paid off as he broke the deadlock 14 minutes after coming on to give Hoffenheim the lead. Darmstadt intensified their attacking efforts but instead of levelling they conceded a second goal from Kramaric in stoppage time.

Two players sent off in Frankfurt

Two red cards, two penalties and two goals: The game between Eintracht Frankfurt and Ingolstadt had plenty to offer. Romain Bregerie bagged the opener for FCI after 26 minutes and nine minutes later Frankfurt’s David Abraham was sent off. However, Frankfurt still pressed for the equaliser and were presented with a golden opportunity in the 50th minute, but Makoto Hasebe first missed his penalty and then the rebound from six yards.

Pascal Groß had more success at the other end, as he converted his penalty in the 60th minute to give Ingolstadt a 2-0 lead. Ingolstadt’s Matthew Leckie was sent off in the 81st minute after receiving a straight red card.
