Bayern held to 0-0 draw in Frankfurt

After ten straight wins, league leaders Bayern München have dropped their first points of the season. The record champions were forced to settle to a frustrating 0-0 draw away at Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Munich side sought to attack the hosts from the off in front of the 51,000 fans at the World Cup venue in Frankfurt. The Frankfurt side line-up with a deep, compact defence on the edge of the box to deny Bayern from penetrating in the opening stages. Arturo Vidal headed Bayern’s best chance on target, but Lukas Hradecky tipped the effort over for a corner.

Lewandowski and Martinez with chances

Once settled into the game, the guests found themselves dominating possession in the Frankfurt, but without the final product. Robert Lewandowski and Javier Martinez both had chances, but neither could break the deadlock.

The longer the game progressed at 0-0, the more confidence was gained by the hosts, as they looked to catch the record champions on the break. Just like Bayern, however, Frankfurt were unable to create any clear-cut chances to test Manuel Neuer’s goal.

Neuer saved blushes

It was almost the perfect start to the second half for Bayern, after an almost costly defensive error led to Douglas Costa being free on goal just seconds after the restart, though the Brazilian fluffed his shot to keep Frankfurt in the game. Likewise at the other end, Neuer almost gifted a goal to the hosts after a scuffed clearance fell to Marc Stendera inside the box. The World Champion made up for the mistake by denying the Frankfurt midfielder with a diving save.

Bayern pushed and pushed for the winner, but as the clock ran down, their hopes of a record-equalling eleventh consecutive win at the start of the season dwindled. Lewandowski had the chance to grab the headlines late on, but for once he failed to hit the target and Bayern would have to settle for a point.
