Bayern goalkeeper Neuer: "Augsburg are a tough opponent"

As Bayern Munich go into their Wednesday evening (20:45 CEST) DFB Cup clash with FC Augsburg, they are defending a remarkable record in the comptetion. They have not lost a match in 90 or 120 minutes in the cup since Borussia Dortmund’s spectacular 5-2 win over them on 12th May 2012. Since then, Bayern are undefeated in 24 matches in regular play, which is a DFB Cup record. They have won the trophy for three of the last four seasons, only losing out in 2015 on a penalty shootout against BVB in the semi finals.

Since making the jump to the Bundesliga in 2011, Augsburg have qualified for the round of 16 four out of five possible times. Their league record against Bayern does not make for especially promising reading. In their last 12 encounters they have lost ten and won just two. In the most recent, Augsburg led 1-0 for the majority of the game but were sunk by two late Bayern strikes. Still, Dirk Schuster’s side will hold hope of staging a cup upset at the Allianz Arena.

Neuer warns of Augsburg threat

Despite their strong records both against Augsburg and in the DFB Cup, Bayern are taking nothing for granted. In the run-up to the game, Manuel Neuer stated that overcoming the Swabians will require total effort from the cup holders, adding “they are never an enjoyable team to play against. They are a tough opponent for every side. They work hard together as a team and they will treat the game like a derby.” Things are taking a little bit of time to come together under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Despite being victorious in their last two games, they experienced three consecutive matches without a win after draws against 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt and a loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, which is something of an alien situation for the record German champions.

Schuster knows that Bayern are not infallible in the DFB Cup. In his playing days, he was a part of the Karlsruher SC side who managed to cause a major upset in the 1996/97 season when they beat Bayern 1-0 in the quarter finals of the cup. His aim will doubtless be to cause a similar level of surprise on Wednesday.
