Bayern extend lead at the top after Hannover win

One or two fans might have been shocked to see FC Bayern München go behind in Hannover, but this wouldn’t last long. With World Champions Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boeteng, Mario Götze and Thomas Müller all in the starting line up, Bayern went on to turn the game around and extend their lead at the top of the table to eleven points ahead of Wolfsburg in second. Hannover continue their winless run in 2015 and are very much involved in the relegation battle.

The visitors only struggled in the early stages as Hannover gave a brave account of themselves and were not undeserving in going ahead through a brilliant solo effort from Hiroshi Kiyotke in the 25th minute. It wouldn’t take long, however, for Bayern to respond, equalising through a delightful Xabi Alonso free kick almost immediately in the 28th minute.

Normal service resumed when they eventually took a deserved lead. Marcelo caught Robert Lewandowski on the head with a high boot to give away a penalty, which Thomas Müller executed to make it 2-1 after 61 minutes. Ten minutes later Müller found the net again, heading in Franck Ribéry’s perfect cross to complete the 3-1 win.

Goalless between Hamburg and Dortmund

Of all teams it was relegation contenders Hamburger SV who halted Borussia Dortmund’s recent winning run. Joe Zinnbauer’s team ground out a goalless draw against his favourite opponents to register an important point in the fight for survival.

For Dortmund, who had lost four of their last five against HSV, this was the first time in four league games that they had failed to win. Jürgen Klopp’s team not only missed the chance to win their 700th Bundesliga match, but also the opportunity to enter the top half of the table for the first time since match day 5.

The guests had significantly more possession from the beginning, but they severely lacked penetration in the final third. The only worthy chance fell to Aubameyang in the first half. The second half was very much the same as the first; Dortmund controlled the game, but lacked the creativity to break down the resilient hosts.

Augsburg stop Wolfsburg’s run

Every streak ends at some point. VfL Wolfsburg have lost for the first time in eleven games. Of all teams it was FC Augsburg, who have been especially poor recently, who ended the winning run with a 1-0 win in the Augsburger SGL-Arena. Augsburg also ended their own winless streak and now find themselves fifth in the Europa League spot. Wolfsburg’s lead over third place Mönchengladbach remains ten points, at least until this evening.

Augsburg were the better team for long stretches of the game. After a foul from Christian Träsch on Baba Rahmen, referee Manuel Gräfe pointed to the spot. Tobias Werner fired the penalty straight at Diego Benaglio in the Wolfsburg goal, but Dominik Kohr was first to react to tap in the rebound. Wolfsburg pushed for the equaliser but the leagues on form striker, Dutchman Bas Dost, was unable to find the net.

Schalke return to form with 3-1 win against Hoffenheim

FC Schalke 04 have finally ended the poor run of three games without a win. The Royal Blues beat 1899 Hoffenheim 3-1 at home to make up for their recent form. With 38 points, Roberto Di Matteo’s team are closing in on direct qualification to the Champions League.

Christian Fuchs set his team on the road to victory early on, volleying in Marco Höger’s perfect cross to make it 1-0. At risk of receiving a second yellow, the Austrian was substituted after 35 minutes as a precautionary measure. Shortly before the break Schalke made it 2-0 after Choupo-Moting chested down another cross from Höger for Max Meyer to follow up and score from close distance.

Max Meyer added to his tally after another inch perfect assist from Choupo-Moting gave the U 21 international another easy goal. Hoffenheim managed to find a mere consolation goal in the 73rd minute through Kevin Volland to make it 3-1.

Bremen end poor run, Freiburg still in drop zone

SV Werder Bremen put an end to their recent blip, having lost one cup and two league games, to beat SC Freiburg away from home, leaving them comfortably in the top half of the table. Things are looking dangerous for Freiburg who could have jumped to at least 17th place with a win.

All the talk before the game was about the goalkeeper situation for the rejuvenated Bremen. After the surprising cup defeat against third division side Arminia Bielefeld, manager Skripnik recalled first choice goalkeeper Raphael Wolf in place of Koen Casteels.

Both teams tried hard to play attacking football but both lacked any real threat going forward. The guests from Bremen came out winners, however, after a clinical finish from Franco Di Santo, who controlled Levin Öztunali’s diagonal cross, cut inside and curled the ball beautifully into the top corner after 35 minutes. The home side battled until the end for an equaliser, but at the expense of more chances for Bremen. Di Santo and former Freiburg player Makiadi missed the games two best chances.

The evening game saw Mainz and Borussia Mönchengladbach play out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Coface Arena. The visitors dominated for long spells of the game; Raffael's brace put them 2-0 up, however, a stunning free kick from Johannes Geis and Shinji Okazaki's clinical header levelled the scores.
