Bayern extend lead at the top

Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points on matchday 23 of the Bundesliga. Following Leipzig’s 2-2 draw in Augsburg on Friday, the record champions eased to a 3-0 victory at FC Cologne. Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, are closing in on second place after an entertaining 6-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. TSG Hoffenheim showed an equally impressive clinical touch in their 5-2 win against FC Ingolstadt. Wolfsburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Mainz, while Werder Bremen earned a vital 2-0 win over Darmstadt.

In Cologne, the hosts nearly took the lead after 19 minutes when Yuya Osako’s header forced Germany keeper Manuel Neuer into a world class save. Bayern took the lead six minutes later when Javi Martinez slotted home from close range. Juan Bernat doubled the advantage shortly after the restart and a late goal from Franck Ribéry saw the table-toppers earned a deserved 3-0 victory.

Aubameyang bags brace against Bayer

Dortmund got off to a quick start as Ousmane Dembélé found the target six minutes into the match. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang followed suit twenty minutes later and Dortmund took a 2-0 lead into half-time. Leverkusen were back in the game after the restart when Germany international Kevin Volland restored some hope. But Aubameyang’s second goal and his 21st of the campaign restored Dortmund’s two goal lead. It was beginning to rain goals now, as Wendell’s direct-free kick saw Leverkusen again cut BVB’s lead. But goals from Christian Pulisic, World Champion André Schürrle and Raphael Guerreiro allowed Dortmund to pull away and claim their third consecutive victory.

Hoffenheim took the lead against Ingolstadt from Sebastian Rudy’s long-range shot after 17 minutes. The visitors levelled from Almog Cohen’s effort after 38 minutes. On the hour mark, FCI even took the lead when Niklas Süle produced on own-goal. But Hoffenheim seemingly found another gear and soared into the lead through goals from Adam Szalai (2), Andrej Kramaric and Benjamin Hübner.

Gomez scores in Jonker’s debut

It was the first game for new coach Andries Jonker at VfL Wolfsburg and his team delivered a solid start as Germany international Mario Gomez scored the opener twenty minutes into the game. However, Jhon Cordoba’s equaliser four minutes later was to be the last goal of the match. Wolfsburg continue to sit just above the relegation zone, while Mainz are safely in 11th place.

Bremen earned a much needed 2-0 victory against Darmstadt in the relegation battle thanks to a brace from Max Kruse. The striker scored from the spot after 75 minutes, giving Bremen the lead, and again in extra time.
