Bayern close in on title as Frankfurt lose ground in relegation battle

League leaders FC Bayern München extended their run at the top the Bundesliga table to ten points on matchday 30. The German champions struggled in the first half against FC Schalke 04, but scored three in the second half to seal a 3-0 victory. Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a big setback in their battle against relegation on matchday 30 in the Bundesliga, losing 3-0 in Leverkusen, while their fellow relegation candidates all managed to seal wins.

SV Darmstadt secured a 2-0 victory over fellow Bundesliga newcomers FC Ingolstadt. FC Augsburg saw off direct opponents VfB Stuttgart with a 1-0 triumph. Werder Bremen earned a crucial 3-2 home victory over Wolfsburg, with Hoffenheim securing three points as well thanks to a 2-1 win against Hertha BSC.

75,000 spectators at the sold out Allianz Arena watch a goalless first half, as Bayern pressured and Schalke stood firm in defence. The Royal Blues showed potential on the break, but never really created any clear-cut chances. Robert Lewandowski scored two in ten minutes midway through the second half to give Bayern the lead, before Chile international Arturo Vidal but Schalke out of sight with a third for Bayern. The defeat denied the Gelsenkirchen side the chance to jump up to fifth place in the league table.

The first half between Leverkusen and Frankfurt produced no goals and the visitors came close to taking the lead when Sonny Kittel fired wide on the hour mark. At the other end, Leverkusen took the lead with goals from Kevin Kampl and Germany U21 international Julian Brandt midway through the second half. Germany international Karim Bellarabi completed the scoring in injury time, with Bayer 04 also claiming third place in the league table from Hertha thanks to the win.

Hertha actually had the better start in Hoffenheim and took the lead after 26 minutes when Germany U21 international Niklas Stark bagged the opener. But the lead didn’t last long, as Fabian Schär equalised a couple minutes later. Mark Uth scored a late winner for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, who still hold a three-point lead over 16th placed Werder Bremen.

Darmstadt secured their second home victory of the season, thanks to second half goals from Konstantin Rausch and Sandro Wagner. Augsburg took the lead through Alfred Finnbogason after 36 minutes and held on to claim a narrow win over Stuttgart, who have now failed to record a win from their last five games.

Bremen took the lead with Claudio Pizarro’s 102nd league goal for Werder in the 32nd minute. The Peruvian striker scored from the spot to become Bremen’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg levelled the score before the break through Josuha Guilavogui, but Fin Bartels’ strike midway through the second half saw Bremen reclaim their advantage. Sambou Yatabaré was on target to give the hosts a two goal lead, with Wolfsburg’s Bas Dost pulling one back in the closing stages of the game.
