Bayern Munich are in the Champions League quarterfinal draw for the sixth year in a row after beating Arsenal 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium. The German giants had already beaten Arsenal by the same score in the first leg in Munich. Theo Walcott put the Gunners into the lead in the 20th minute, but a penalty from Robert Lewandowski (55‘) and a goal from Arjen Robben (68‘) turned the game around for Bayern. The Germans put the icing on the cake through goals from Douglas Costa (78’) and two from Arturo Vidal (80’, 85’).
Arsenal dominated the first-half and, with slightly more precision in the final third, could have gone in at half-time with a healthier lead on the night. The Londoners also started the second-half brightly and Olivier Giroud, who only started the game because Danny Welbeck fell ill during the warm-up, was proving an aerial threat in the box. However, the game turned in Bayern’s favour in a similar manner to that of the first leg. Once again, it was the departure of Laurent Koscielny, this time to a red card, which opened up gaps in the Arsenal defence which Bayern clinically exploited.
The Arsenal captain received his marching orders for the foul on Robert Lewandowski which led to the Bayern equaliser from the penalty spot. From then on, Bayern cut through Arsenal with ease and comfortably booked their place in the quarterfinals.
