Bayern back on top with Friday night win in Mainz

Record champions Bayern München are temporarily back on top of the Bundesliga table after a 3-1 away to 1. FSV Mainz 05. However, Leipzig can of course reclaim first place tomorrow as they come up against Schalke 04 (18:30 CET).

Arjen Robben (21’) in his 150th Bundesliga game and Robert Lewandowski (8’, 90+2’) were on target for Bayern, who surprisingly again conceded for the eighth game in a row. Mainz striker Jhon Córdoba had put his side in the lead very early on (4’), but the Zerofivers were ultimately not able to hold onto their advantage.

Lewandowski cancels out Mainz’ early opener

34,000 fans packed into the Opel Arena for the clash, and they didn’t have to wait long for the first goal, as Córdoba’s was played through by Malli and finished past Manuel Neuer inside the opening five minutes. However, the hosts’ lead lasted just four minutes before Lewandowski equalised.

The impressive Robben, who headed in Bayern’s second from a Thomas Müller cross, was included in the same starting XI as Frank Ribéry for the first time since the 2nd of March. Incidentally, this game was also against Mainz, but the Bavarian club were beaten 2-1 on that day.

Mainz rely on counterattacks

Ancelotti left midfielders Xabi Alonso and Arturo Vidal out of the starting XI, opting for a midfield duo of Lahm and Thiago. Ribéry, Robben, Lewandowski and Müller were deployed in the attack for Bayern, in what was a more offensive system chosen by the Italian coach. As the game progressed, the hosts were being forced back more and more to their own penalty area and were waiting to pounce on mistakes from Bayern, which however were few and far between.

Shortly after the break, Robben shot just over Jonas Lössl’s goal (47’), and the Bavarian club continued to be the slightly more dominant side throughout the second period. Lewandowski rounded off his team’s victory in stoppage time with a goal direct from a free-kick (90+2’). This was his third brace in Mainz in as many games at the Opel Arena.
