Bayern and Wolfsburg comfortably into quarterfinals

FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg have both advanced to the quarterfinal of the UEFA Women’s Champions League tonight with wins over FK Rossijanka (4-0) and Eskilstuna (3-0) respectively. It’s the first time in Bayern’s history that they’ve made it this far in the competition. The draw for the next round will take place on the 25th of November.

Bayern repeat first leg result

Bayern had a 4-0 aggregate lead over their opponents heading into the second leg, therefore, coach Thomas Wörle rested a few players, including Simone Laudehr and her long-term Germany national team teammate Melanie Behringer. Bayern dominated the early stages but took until the 42nd minute to score their first - Miedema struck just as it looked the sides would go into the break level. Bayern started the second half well and doubled their advantage just seven minutes after the restart, it was Miedema again with the goal. Despite the cold temperatures, Bayern were really up for the game, netting two more before the final whistle. Däbritz volleyed in her team’s third, while Holstad Berge crowned the victory with a goal in stoppage time.

Wolfsburg follow Bayern with emphatic aggregate win

The UEFA Women’s Champions League winners from 2013 and 2014 lined up with four Germany national team players: Almuth Schult, Babett Peter, Alexandra Popp and Julia Simic, while Anja Mittag and Anna Blässe were given a rest by coach Ralf Kellermann. Just like Bayern, Wolfsburg kicked off the second leg knowing they were in control of the tie, as they triumphed 5-1 in the first encounter. Nevertheless, they still took the game to their opponents. They were unlucky not to find the next before, but eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Jakabfi swung in a corner which wasn’t cleared properly by the Swedes, and Dickenmann took full advantage of the situation. In the second period, Wolfsburg continued to trouble their opponents and put themselves 2-0 up through Jakabfi in the 62nd minute. Jakabfi was also involved in Wolfsburg final goal of the game, as with five minutes to go, she put another dangerous corner into the box which Bernauer headed home.
