Bayern and Leverkusen in goalless draw

Table-topping Bayern had to settle for a draw with Leverksuen on the 20th matchday of the Bundesliga. 30,210 spectators witnessed both sides play to nil in a sold out BayArena. Bayern didn’t lose their grip on the top of the table, however, because of Dortmund’s draw, meaning they remain eight points clear in the Bundesliga.

Bayern had four wins in a row previously, but had to go without Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez and new arrival Serdar Tasci, who injured himself in training the day he was due to be presented.

Pep Guardiola surprised everyone with his team selection, starting World Cup winner Thomas Müller on the bench. The first half saw very few chances for either side. Only Kingsley Coman, who broke down the wing and was denied by Bernd Leno from a tight angle, threatened for the Bavarian side. Müller finally came on after the hour mark, replacing Robben, and almost made an instant impact with two huge chances in the 64th and 65th minute. But despite boosting his side’s attacking threat, he was unable to help his side to victory.

The Mexican goalscorer Javier Hernandez nearly scored for the home side after 53 minutes. He received the ball around 20 yards from goal and let off a venomous volley which dipped, but unfortunately for Leverkusen, it dipped just wide of the post.

Geis on target in Schalke victory over Wolfsburg

World Champion Julian Draxler and the “Wolves” continue to struggle. Draxler returned to Gelsenkirchen for the first time, having left the club for Wolfsburg during the summer. Wolfsburg are now without a win from their last seven games and drop back into eighth place.

Hertha hold Dortmund to goalless draw

The encounter between third-placed Hertha BSC and second-placed Borussia Dortmund produced no winner, as the game ended in a goalless draw. Germany internationals Marco Reus and Ilkay Gündogan returned to the starting formation for the visitors, but were unable to provide the decisive impact as the game played out in a deserved stalemate.

Hertha had the better chances in the first half, as Dortmund struggled to find their rhythm. The visitors missed their best chance shortly after the break through Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while the hosts nearly took the spoils after 78 minutes when Salomon Kalou failed to finish off a well-executed counter attack.
