Bayern and Ingolstadt triumph as the Bavarians return to the top

FC Bayern Munich returned to the summit of the Bundesliga on matchday 14 thanks to a 5-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg. While Bayern completed their route, RB Leipzig suffered their first loss of the league season, as FC Ingolstadt earned a 1-0 shock win. After Arjen Robben opened the scoring, Bayern soared to victory with two Robert Lewandowski strikes, a Douglas Costa effort and a drought-breaker from Thomas Müller.

Leipzig’s shock defeat came at the hand of a header from Ingolstadt defender Roger in the first half. Their loss, coupled with Bayern’s win sees their three-match spell at the top of the table come to an end due to Bayern’s superior goal difference. Borussia Dortmund now sit eight points behind both after drawing 1-1 with 1. FC Köln, who had taken the lead through Artjoms Rudnevs in the 28th minute. Thomas Tuchel’s side looked set for defeat until Marco Reus nabbed the equaliser in stoppage time. Köln player Salih Özcan received a red card after the goal, while his side remain two points behind BVB in the table.

Hamburg get second consecutive win; Darmstadt in last place

At the other end of the table, Hamburger SV were able to celebrate their second win in succession. HSV went down 10 men on the stroke of half time when Lewis Holtby was penalised for an elbow, but the numbers were made even again in the 66th minute, when Dominik Kohr received his marching orders for a second bookable offence. Filip Kostic put Hamburg in front four minutes later, and that was enough to give them the three points.

Hamburg’s triumph was another piece of bad news for SV Darmstadt 98, who are now bottom of the table following a 1-0 loss to SC Freiburg. A controversial penalty awarded in the 86th minute was converted by Nils Petersen to seal Darmstadt’s misery, leaving them on 9 points, trailing Hamburg by one.
